Cymmer swimming pool is to undergo a survey in order to better understand the costs incurred in making the pool ready for public use.

The survey is due to take place shortly as Afan Valley Community Leisure hold hopes of opening the swimming pool by April.

An Afan Valley Community Leisure spokesperson said, “The date being worked towards is April, however if the survey throws up any problems then the work date can obviously be affected.”

The reopening of the pool will be aided by funding from local windfarm companies, Fynnon Oer and Gamesa, as well as an annual grant of £10,000 from a health board.

An Afan Valley Community Leisure spokesperson added, “We’re hoping grants like this will help bridge the gap. The big thing is that this has offered a new way forward for the pool. Neath Port Talbot College have indicated they are in a position where they are fully committed to working together with the local community.”

Due to the fact the pool will now be part of LLandarcy Park Ltd., a separate set of membership packages and details, however fine tuning of these details will not take place until after the completion of the survey. Provisional timetables detailing educational and training opportunities will also be made available.

The news comes following Council official’s decision to sell Cymmer pool to a new community company and a commercial division of Neath Port Talbot College, Llandarcy Park Ltd.

A Council spokesperson said, “The transfer was approved and we look forward to Afan Valley Community Leisure and Neath Port Talbot College completing the process very quickly. The Council has now done all that it can to safeguard the future of this facility.”
