Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will visit Baglan’s Neath Port Talbot Hospital tomorrow (15 February) in her role as Patron of the Royal College of Midwives to see midwife-led care in action.
The Royal visitor will meet midwives, mothers and babies at the Birth Centre with the aim of highlighting the work being done by midwives and other members of the maternity team at the unit, to enhance pregnancy and birth experiences.
Her Royal Highness will also meet midwife Bryany Tweedale-Bend, who has just been named the Wales Midwife of the Year, in the Royal College of Midwives Annual Awards. Bryany is a midwife working at the Birth Centre and local community service and was nominated by Cwmgwrach mum Laura Geary.
Commenting on the visit, Professor Lesley Page, president of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “I am delighted that The Princess Royal is making this visit to the Neath Port Talbot maternity unit. It is a wonderful opportunity to show her midwife-led care and how this can benefit mothers and their babies. She also added, “This unit and others like it are wonderful environments for women and their families, and I hope that this Royal visit will raise the profile of midwife-led care even more.”
Her Royal Highness will also unveil a plaque commemorating her visit to the centre, which opened in 2004. She will spend one hour touring the unit with specific timings to be released on the day of the visit.
